The mid-season transfer window is indeed an arena for every football team to improve their squad by bringing in new ammunition, and sometimes that method works, but not a few are considered to be failed and considered bad transfers. Like the following 3 cases in La Liga, it is considered the worst January transfer.
1. Leo Baptistao
The Brazilian striker performed brilliantly with Rayo Vallecano in the 2012/13 season, with the fact that he was still young, and was then recruited by Atletico Madrid in the summer transfer window in 2013. Unfortunately, with Atletico, Leo’s performance was relatively disappointing, and rarely revealed, until finally decided to leave the winter transfer market and arrived at Real Betis.
Not only stop there, his career at Real Betis was also bad even worse, because Real Betis were relegated in the Segunda Division, and the bad news for him that was no less miserable, Atletico Madrid won the La Liga championship. If only Baptistao had been patient to be the bench warmer until the end of the season, he would have felt the title with Los Rojiblancos, rather than feeling relegation with Real Betis.
2. Maxi Lopez
In 2005, Barcelona made a very ineffective transfer by recruiting Lopez in January from River Plate for 6.5 million Euros.
The Argentine immediately got the task to replace the injured Henrik Larsson. Despite scoring an important goal against Chelsea on his Champions League debut, Lopez immediately became a permanent warm-up bench before being eliminated from the Barcelona squad. After Henrik Larsson returned to recover and the appearance of Lionel Messi, Lopez was not needed anymore at the Camp Nou and left in the summer transfer market.
3. Yerry Mina
Had been predicted to be a future defender for Barcelona, in fact, Yerry Mina was known as one of Barcelona’s failed recruits. Indeed, Yerry Mina was initially redeemed in the winter transfer market in January 2017 and to cover Pique or Umtiti who pulled over due to injury, unfortunately the concerned appeared bad when given the confidence to play in the party against Levante. Since then, the Colombian defender has been pushed aside from the main squad, and finally chose to leave last summer to Everton.
