Carragher suggests Liverpool to sign a new defender this winter

Legendary former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has again advised his former club to buy a center-back on the occasion of the winter transfer window in January.

The advice from the legend is none other than the injury suffered by the club’s mainstay center-back, Joel Matip in the match against West Bromwich Albion last weekend.

As is known, in the match last Sunday (27/12), Matip had to be pulled out in the second half because he complained of pain in his groin.

Of course the conditions are not good to face Boxing Day at the turn of this year. The defender’s absence then worsened the condition of Liverpool’s back line, considering that previously Joe Gomez and Virgil Van Dijk were sidelined due to injuries.

Indeed, Liverpool currently still have other players like Rhys Wiliams and Nathaniel Phillips, but they are still very young and lack experience.

For this reason, Jamie Carragher advises Liverpool to sign at least one center-back during the January transfer window.

“This is a big worry, but it is not a new concern. Joel Matip will not play every game between now and the end of the season.”

“We knew that even before today’s injury, which is why Liverpool had to sign someone in January. I said it immediately after Virgil van Dijk got injured against Everton, “Carragher told Sky Sports.

Carragher himself believes that Liverpool is still a candidate for Premier League Champion this season, even without Virgil Van Dijk.

But the only thing that could be the reason why they failed is the central defender crisis. The two available young defenders will not be able to continue to be a mainstay until the end of the season.

“I still believe Liverpool are the best team in this league, even without Van Dijk and I think most people would say they are favorites to win the Premier League.”

“The only way they don’t win is if they have problems in the center-back sector, where Rhys Williams or Nat Phillips have to play for a long period of time,” he said.
