Chelsea managed to secure tickets to the quarter-finals of the European Champions League this season after beating Atletico Madrid, including in the second leg this morning.
As is known, Chelsea hosted the Spanish La Liga representative in the second leg of the last 16 of the European Champions League earlier in the morning (18/03).
After previously winning 1-0 in the first leg at Wanda Metropolitani, Chelsea certainly played more confidently, especially when the second leg took place at home.
However, Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid were of course also determined to win, which was evident from the first minute, when the match was tough.
The Spanish Liga representatives played very offensively, eyeing a goal to temporarily equalize on the aggregate. However, Chelsea also did not remain silent, the players looked calm waiting for the opponent to let their guard down to then launch a counterattack.
Sure enough, in the end the hosts scored two goals each through Hakim Ziyech and Emerson Palmieri in each half. The 2-0 score was the end of this second leg and made the aggregate 3-0, the victory of the Blues.
Speaking after the match, coach Thomas Tuchel admitted that he was very satisfied with the performance of his players who from the start wanted to win, not a draw which was certainly safer.
“Very good performance, incredible effort, even from the players in the stands. You can feel that we really want to win,”
“They tried to put pressure on us in the first half but with that opened up some space behind their midfield that we could take advantage of.” said Tuchel on the official UEFA website.
Furthermore, the German man admitted that Atletico Madrid really put pressure on his team from the start, fortunately the Chelsea players were also ready to take on physical duels.
“We know that when our attacking lines struggle, we can rely on our physical duels. We have no problem with physical duels if we can’t find a solution in attack. We enjoy this duel,” he said.
