Ernesto Valverde: “I couldn’t risk playing Messi against Inter Milan”.

Although it has been two weeks passed, but Messi still did not appear in the list of Barcelona’s starting line-up in the match against Inter Milan early this morning (07/11) local time. In fact, the presence of the captain is of course awaited by the fans so that their beloved team can win convincingly at San Siro Stadium. Messi unfortunately only sat in the audience throughout the game and watching his teammates play. And related to this, Ernesto Valverde revealed the reason behind his decision.

Lionel Messi, 31-year-old player, immediately step on the gas as a mainstay of Barcelona at the beginning of this season. He has even packed 10 goals in 11 games that the Catalan giants have played at the start of this season. Unfortunately, Messi had to pull over and miss a number of matches following the injury he got in the La Liga side against Sevilla two weeks ago. Just a few minutes after scoring Barcelona’s 2nd goal in the match, Messi fell in the wrong position.

His hand landed on the ground first, so the captain suffered a serious injury to his hand and could not continue the match. Initial predictions, Messi only took two weeks to recover and return to play. Messi also trained with his colleagues ahead of the match against Inter Milan earlier this morning. But in fact, La Pulga was not revealed by manager Ernesto Valverde.

Many wondered about the manager’s decision, but Valverde immediately explained after the game that he did not want to take the risk of playing Messi, and the captain also understood that.

“We can’t take risks with Messi. Exercise is not the same as playing [in real action]. We have talked about this and he understands,” said Valverde after the match.

Barcelona only picked one point from a trip to the San Siro yesterday, after only drawing 1-1. They remain top of the table with 10 points, and Valverde insists that Barca must win in the remaining two matches against Tottenham and PSV.

“We have to secure first place in the following two matches [against PSV Eindhoven and Tottenham Hotspur]. That’s our target, but we go home feeling happy. Malcom looks amazing and we are certainly very happy for him,” said Valverde.
