The success of becoming the champion of the 2020 MotoGP season has made Suzuki Elctar Rider Joan Mir have the privilege of wearing the number # 1 in the upcoming MotoGP 2021. But interestingly, the Spanish racer was still hesitant to wear that number.
For information, in the MotoGP event, race number # 1 can only be worn by riders who won the previous season.
Last 2020 season, Joan Mir managed to become world champion for the first time. The 23-year-old rider finished in the top position after winning 6 podiums and one win from 10 races that took place.
Number # 1 may sound fun, special, indicating that we are riders who won the previous season. However, since 2000, number # 1 seems to have a curse in MotoGP. Whoever wore it, always failed to defend the title.
There are several real-life examples who have had this experience such as Alex Criville, Kenny Roberts Jr., Nicky Hayden, Casey Stoner and Jorge Lorenzo.
It is not surprising then that many riders do not end up using their privileges like Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez.
Now, Joan Mir also admits that he has received an offer from Suzuki to wear this number at the MotoGP 2021 event.
“My decision will not depend on anything. The decision will depend on myself. Suzuki has told me that they want me to wear number 1,” he said.
The Spaniard admits that the right to wear the jersey number is very special, but on the one hand he feels that the jersey number 36 also brings his own luck.
So the person concerned is still considering whether next season he will wear the jersey number # 1 or not.
“It is a privilege to wear # 1, but I really like number 36 because I won two titles with it. This number brings good luck. It’s a complicated matter.”
“Right now I tend to want to use number # 1, but I’ll take the time to think about it more calmly,” concluded Mir.
For information, the number 36 itself was also worn by Mir when he became the Moto2 champion in 2017.
