The failure of Tottenham Hotspur to continue the move to the 2020/21 Europa League quarter-finals clearly made coach Jose Mourinho disappointed. Interestingly, the tactician blamed his players.
On Friday morning WIB (19/03), Tottenham Hotspur faced Dinamo Zagreb to play the second leg of the last 16 of the European Champions League.
Actually, the Spurs can be said to have the upper hand, because they won 2-0 in the first leg meeting. Should, a draw, even a 0-1 loss to the hosts was enough to bring the Spurs to the last eight.
But what happened at Dinamo Zagreb headquarters was even tragic for the Spurs, they were beaten 0-3, where the three goals were scored by Mislav Orsic. Thus, the North London Club was officially eliminated from the Europa League after losing 3-2 on aggregate to representatives of Croatia.
Obviously this is disappointing for Tottenham Hotspur and of course coach Jose Mourinho is also disappointed. But interestingly, the tactician blamed his players for the defeat.
“I’m not running from it. I am disappointed with the difference in attitude from one team to another. I feel sorry that my team is a team that does not bring not only the basics of football but also the basics of life to the game.”
“That is to respect our work and give everything,” Mourinho was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.
Furthermore, the Portuguese coach also apologized to the Tottenham Hotspur fans, because thus their chances of qualifying for the European Champions League next season through the Europa League path automatically ran aground.
“I can only apologize to the Tottenham supporters. I hope they feel the same way as me. Today is life or death and at this time we are dead.”
“In some of the other matches I have the same feeling. Until the last day of the season we felt the same way. have to try and do your best, “said Mourinho.
That way, Tottenham must fight to win a place in the top four of the Premier League final standings if they want to qualify for the Champions League next season.
