Surprisingly, the German National Team lost to a team from nowhere, Macedonia in the 2022 World Cup qualifying round. So, what did coach Joachim Low say about the defeat?
As is well known, the Group J continued duel took place in the early hours of WIB (01/04) bringing Germany and North Macedonia together. The match took place at Shauinsland-Reisen-Arena, Germany.
Acting as the host, the Panzer Team should have been championed to win, but the opposite happened. Joachim Low’s men first conceded a goal at the end of the first half by Goran Pandev.
The hosts responded with a goal scored by Ilkay Gundogan with a penalty in the 63rd minute, unfortunately, five minutes before the match ended, Eljif Elmas managed to bring North Macedonia back 2-1 ahead.
Macedonia’s 2-1 lead lasted until the game ended, meaning Germany dropped three points at home.
Of course this was a bad and disappointing defeat for the German National Team, they not only lost three points but also had to bear shame at home.
“This is very disappointing,” said coach Joachim Loew as quoted by BBC Sport.
Furthermore, Joachim Low argued that this defeat was due to the condition of his players who were mostly not in good fitness so the tactics applied did not work well.
“We weren’t fresh enough, we made mistakes. When we played quickly we were dangerous but we didn’t find a way to really threaten.”
“Overall, it’s disappointing to lose like that at home,” he said.
On the other hand, this victory is a blessing for North Macedonia, as their dark horse team has already won two victories in the qualifying round which increases the chances of playing in the 2022 World Cup.
“These players have made North Macedonia proud against the winners of four World Cups and three Euro titles,”
“We have never beaten a team with so many titles. Now we have to rest because what we have accomplished is not yet embedded,” said North Macedonia coach Igor Angelovski.
