Real Madrid fans are starting to worry about Luka Modric’s situation, who has yet to agree on a new contract at the Santiago Bernabeu. Questioning that, the Croatian midfielder finally spoke up.
For information, currently the former Tottenham Hotspur player is still under contract until June 2021. That means he can leave this winter, or wait for the end of the season and leave on a free transfer.
However, on the one hand, Luka Modric is still a very important figure in Zinedine Zidane’s squad. He even only once stepped aside from a total of 18 matches in the 2020/21 La Liga season.
Apart from his role on the field, the 2018 World Cup Runner Up also plays an important role in the dressing room. Together with Sergio Ramos, Luka Modric is highly respected by other Real Madrid players.
No wonder coach Zinedine Zidane has several times hinted at Real Madrid’s management to immediately award a new contract to Luka Modric. Including new contracts also to two other players, Sergio Ramos and Lucas Vazquez.
However, the reality is that until now there has been no official announcement from the club.
Regarding this, Luka Modric, who had been silent, finally spoke up. He admitted that talks on a new contract had started and were going well so far.
“I can’t really say much. I spoke to the club and everything is going in the right direction.”
“I did not change anything, specifically. I continue to work outside the training session, I have a strong desire to compete. There is no problem at all,” said Modric as quoted by Goal International.
Furthermore, Modric was asked about his teammate, Sergio Ramos. Reportedly, the new contract between Ramos and Madrid is deadlocked over salaries.
“I cannot put myself on anyone’s side. Sergio Ramos is my friend and I wish him all the best. I want him to be happy. It is a business between him and the club. I cannot be involved,” said Modric.
