Herve Poncharal as the Manager of the Red Bull KTM Tech 3 Team who also doubles as the President of IRTA considers Marc Marquez to remain the best rider in MotoGP this season, despite his absence due to injury.
As is known, the 28-year-old racer suffered a fracture of the right humerus after falling in the Spanish MotoGP on Sunday (19/07). Initially predicted to recover quickly, but it turned out to be much worse than expected.
The reason is, the steel plate that was installed on Marc Marquez’s arm was broken, as a result the doctor had to re-install the complete plate and it took the racer up to 3 months to recover.
With that long duration, the eight-time world champion may not be able to play at all for the remainder of the 2020 season. However, he also has the opportunity to appear in the last two series if the recovery process progresses faster.
According to Poncharal, the hope of winning the Repsol Honda Team racer has completely vanished. But he is sure, the last two series will only be a warm-up arena for the rider to welcome next season.
“The champion’s title is gone, but I’m sure he will come back this year too, because if you are Marc Marquez and have won lots of wins and titles, I think it is okay to go back to having two races before winter.”
“That way, you can regain confidence and confirm that you are still fast,” said Poncharal.
Poncharal admits that Marc Marquez’s absence made the other Riders more competitive towards the championship ladder. However, in his view the 27 year old racer is still a benchmark for other contestants.
“This season is interesting to watch because other riders have improved, especially the young ones. Some of them are now even able to win and their bikes have made significant progress.”
“But Marc is still their benchmark. So, we’ll see when Marc returns, “concluded the President of IRTA.
Indeed, competition in MotoGP this season seems more difficult to predict. Although Fabio Quartararo tops the standings, the difference in points with Dovizioso who is in 2nd place is very slim.
