Real Madrid legend regrets Odegaard’s decision to join Arsenal

The 2021 January winter transfer market was used as a means of transfer for young Norwegian star, Martin Odegaard to Arsenal. Although only on loan status, Odegaard’s decision is unfortunate for Real Madrid legend, Jorge Valdano.

Since being recruited from Stromgodset in 2015, Martin Odegaard rarely gets a place in the first team. Even initially he played for the Castilla team, after which the midfielder ventured to a number of clubs on loan.

However, in the 2020 season, Real Madrid withdrew Odegaard from a loan. Zidane had included him in the main squad during the first half of this season.

Even so, Odegaard still rarely gets the opportunity to appear, as a result the 22-year-old player took advantage of the transfer market opportunity this winter to move to Arsenal on loan again.

Odegaard’s decision to leave Real Madrid to join Arsenal does look right, considering that at Arsenal there is at least an opportunity to break into the main squad like Dani Ceballos.

However, it seems that this decision was not approved by all parties, such as the legend of Real Madrid, Jorge Valdano who regretted the decision.

This is because according to Valdano, the quality that Odegaard has is still needed by Real Madrid for now.

“The quality that Odegaard has is necessary for this Real Madrid team. I don’t think Odegaard is playing badly. Maybe he is a bit conservative in his own way, maybe he lacks some courage, but he also lacks the patience to continue at Real Madrid. ”

“In the end he was competing with two stars like Modric and Kroos,” Valdano told El Transistor.

Apart from technical matters, Valdano criticized Martin Odegaard’s mentality of giving up so quickly to fight for a place in Los Blancos’ main squad.

“I pay more attention to the mentality. It’s not worth a Real Madrid player leaving your place, not having that patience. It’s not just any player in front of him. ”

“I was surprised that he would leave the club and leave his place open to other people,” he said.

In fact, it is very natural when young players need more playing minutes and choose to leave, especially since Odegaard has only recorded 9 appearances this season at Real Madrid.
