The new Barcelona coach, Ronald Koeman, revealed how the conversation between him and the club’s superstar Lionel Messi had just arrived as coach of the Catalan giants.
As is well known, Ronald Koeman did face a complicated problem when he only served as Barcelona manager. How come? The captain and the club’s main icon, Lionel Messi is unhappy and plans to leave.
It’s no secret that last summer, the player nicknamed La Pulga is planning to leave Camp Nou. He has even sent a fax containing a transfer request to Barcelona.
He was linked with a number of clubs, but in the end Messi gave up on staying at the Camp Nou with one year remaining on his contract.
So, Koeman himself certainly did not remain silent seeing this situation. As a coach, he immediately approached Lionel Messi to talk privately about the player’s situation at the club.
In this expression, Koeman explained that he could not change Messi’s situation at Barcelona, but at least he could help by changing the team’s game.
“When I arrived they told me that Messi was unhappy. We talked to him at his house. He explained the reason to me and I honestly said that the only thing I could do was change the game,”
“Everything has to do with the system, his position on the pitch and his important role in the team. However, I cannot change the situation at the club itself,” Koeman told Diario Sport.
In the end, Lionel Messi did stay at Barcelona, because the club was adamant that he would only release him if someone paid the buy out clause of 700 million pounds.
Messi may be disappointed with the club, but Koeman can ensure that the 33-year-old still has a lot of commitment to Barcelona.
“Messi showed me a person who wants to win, be the best and continue to be the best, even though he has problems with the club,”
“Barcelona has become, is still and will be a better team with and without Messi,” Koeman continued.
