Lionel Messi has just won the Ballon d’Or 2019 trophy, defeating two of his competitors, Virgil Van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo. The Argentina mega star received the most votes in the award held by France Football. That way, Messi now has collected six Ballon d’Or titles, the most trophies in history.
Indeed, the greatness of Lionel Messi is recognized by many people, not only from the Barcelona legend or Argentine legend, not only from his team-mates. The opposing players also did not hesitate to recognize the greatness of La Pulga. In fact, a number of former teammates Cristiano Ronaldo, who incidentally is the eternal rival Messi, also recognizes the greatness of Messi. Who are them?
1. Iker Casillas
Most recently, Messi led Barcelona to a narrow 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid. The duel at Wanda Metropolitano took place fiercely, before finally La Pulga scored a crucial goal at the end of the match through his magical action. Casillas then uploaded the status on Twitter which contained praise for Messi.
“Formula for football: goalkeeper (Ter-Stegen) & player (Messi),” Casillas wrote.
Casillas himself spent six years as a fellow Ronaldo at Real Madrid.
2. Wayne Rooney
Cristiano Ronaldo spent his time at Manchester United along with a number of great players, including Wayne Rooney. Although not denying the greatness of his team-mates, but the former England national team player still considers Messi as the best in history.
“I think they both are probably the two best players who have ever played. I think Messi is the greatest of all time,” Rooney said.
3. Ryan Giggs
Like Rooney, Giggs is also Ronaldo’s former colleague at Manchester United. Although inclined to support Ronaldo, Giggs did not hesitate to mention that Messi is on a different level.
“Obviously I am leaning towards Ronaldo a little because I played with him and saw him develop. But Messi is a genius, he’s a valuable player for life. It’s that simple,” Giggs said.
4. Raul Gonzales
And the last is Ronaldo’s former colleague in Madrid, Raul Gonzales. Raul has even been a teammate of a number of top players, including Zinedine Zidane. But among all, Messi considered to have something more.
“I was lucky to be able to play with Zidane, Ronaldo, Figo and Cristiano. But Messi is different. He makes everything look so easy. When you see him play, it’s almost as if you saw him on the road playing with his friends,” Raul said.
