Paolo Maldini, the legend of AC Milan and the Italian National Team recently took the time to reveal who were the players who caused him the most trouble when he was still actively playing.
The figure who currently serves as AC Milan’s Technical Director is indeed known as one of the maestros in defensive affairs in the history of football.
Throughout his career as a former player, he has won many championship trophies and individual awards. Starting from 1984 until retiring in 2009.
With the fact that Maldini during his career defending AC Milan is still respected, the legendary defender has of course faced a line of tough players.
Whether it’s in the Italian Serie A, European Champions League, or at the World Cup and European Cup. However, among all the players he has faced, only three have made Maldini a lot of trouble, they are Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and Diego Maradona.
“The toughest opponents I have faced are Diego Maradona, Ronaldo, who was phenomenal in his two years at Inter, and Zinedine Zidane,” said Gazzetta dello Sport.
Maldini did face the three football legends on several occasions. Whether at the National Team level or at the club level.
Interestingly, Ronaldo who is a Brazilian legend also said that Paolo Maldini is the toughest defender he has ever faced in his past career.
“The toughest defender I have faced in my entire career? Paolo Maldini will be the toughest,” he exclaimed.
However, the former Real Madrid and AC Milan player also thinks other Italian defenders such as Fabio Cannavaro and Alessandro Nesta are also very tough.
“Among other Italian defenders, I would say Cannavaro, Nesta and [Pietro] Vierchowod, all very strong,” he explained.
Another Brazilian legend, Ronaldinho, also had time to praise Paolo Maldini.
“It must be Maldini. His skills are too great. It is impossible not to be amazed by how he makes things look easy, especially when you can play with him,” said Ronaldinho.
