Van Dijk suffered a long term injury, Liverpool advised to recruit this defender

Jamie Carragher has urged his former club, Liverpool to sign a young French defender, Dayot Upamecano due to Virgil Van Dijk’s severe injury. According to him, the RB Leipzig defender will be the right successor at the heart of the Reds defense.

As is known, Virgil Van Dijk left the Marseyside duel earlier last weekend. The defender for the Dutch National Team found a horror tackle from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Many think that the incident that occurred in the 6th minute should have earned Jordan Pickford a direct red card from the referee. The reason is, the English player did a tackle with both feet.

But apart from that, Van Dijk’s situation is more worrying. On Sunday (18/10), Liverpool confirmed that Van Dijk had an Achilles tendon injury which forced him to miss for the next six months or so.

Obviously, this is a big slap for Liverpool who have relied on Van Dijk at the heart of their defense.

As a result, club legend Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to recruit a new center-back in the January 2020 winter transfer market.

“Liverpool’s next big signing will have to be center-back and I’m talking next summer. Dejan Lovren left and they didn’t replace him so they only have three center-backs and one of them, Joel Matip, is always injured.”

“There is a question mark now about Joe Gomez,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

For this reason, Carragher then suggested Van Dijk to recruit a young French defender, Dayot Upamecano, who appeared fierce with RB Leipzig in last season’s campaign.

“There is a young man everyone is talking about in Leipzig, Dayot Upamecano, there is talk about him. Does he have a Van Dijk profile, I think he is shorter, so he may not be too tall.”

“But if he’s the person they want then make it happen. Pay the extra cash and do it on January 1st. That means going through 11 league games without Virgil van Dijk, “he continued.

So far, there hasn’t been any confirmation from coach Jurgen Klopp regarding the plan to purchase a new center-back.
